An edible bird’s nest is built by the swiftlet, layer upon layer, from its own secretion. No one can make it.
So before we look at the nest, we look at the place the swiftlets return to: the sky, the forest, the water, sound, light, and the care given every day. We believe quality begins in what cannot be seen.

Built on the environment GLYKEN operates on site, it is a project of environment, research and communication that GLYKEN and NIPPON BANSHO grow together.

Sky, forest, water, plants, insects, sound, light and daily care: the whole environment in which swiftlets can choose where to return.

Sky, forest and water
A sky open to the sea, palm forests and scattered water. We treat what lies beyond the walls as part of the home.

Open to the sky, made for nesting.
Fine grooves are cut, one by one, into the nesting boards on the ceiling. The grooves give a foothold, and a foothold lets a nest be built.

Sound and light
Sound at dawn and dusk, light from the entrance. The equipment is checked every day, not simply installed.

Before we take, we look.
From below, you cannot see inside a nest on the ceiling. We slip in a small mirror and check with our own eyes that there are no eggs and no young being raised.

Environment
At Bird Residence, the sound systems that guide swiftlets are checked and the spaces are cleaned and cared for every day.

Before harvest, the inside of each nest is checked by eye with a small mirror tool.
